Introduce Yourself

    Hi Everyone!

We are all part of the same organization and some of us have met each other at various AISAP events or the Annual Institute, but I thought it might be nice to have a thread specifically for introducing ourselves, both professionally and personally.

    I'll start!

Professionally, I've been in business administration for nearly 30 years now-my how time flies.  The entire time I've been an administrator or manager, I've been involved with the technology, starting way back with have a dual boot Apple back in college, then an 80-88 "laptop" in the early 90's and so on.  I remember DOS; I remember when Windows came along and Windows 3.11; and I remember when hard drives got a whole Gigabyte of memory.  My whole professional life I've been using software and building hardware so I'm very knowledgeable about systems and that's how I landed at AISAP.  I initially started coordinating the webinars--and through that met many of AISAPs presenters and champions--but I think Janice recognized that spark in me that I knew a lot more, so it grew from there!

Personally, I'm the proud wife of a handsome man whom I call DD or Dear Hubby--he's a cross between Jerry Garcia and Santa.  DD and I are the proud parents of seven children: six boys and our youngest, a girl!  All of our children are grown and out of the house (our dear daughter just moved onto her university campus "on her own" this year), and about half of them are married.  All seven children took their own unique educational routes, as we allowed each child to be educated in a way that was best for their abilities and preferences.  Some were home-schooled and never set foot in a public school.  Some did charter schools.  Some were a mix of home and private schooling.  And one son just LOVED his Montessouri school, so that was my introduction to independent schools.

Dear  Hubby and I have three cats, are enthusiastic Seattle Seahawk fans, and in our spare time, we are gamer-geeks.  With my computer background I've played since Zelda was just blurry pixels, but currently we are playing Lord of the Rings Online (as we are big Tolkien fans).  We also love to read to each other and cook exotic recipes for the fun of trying something different.

Hi friends, I'm Emily. I've worked in the independent school advancement field for my entire career. I was public-school educated, but my stepfather was an educational consultant for many years and introduced me to the world of independent schools. I spent three years doing admissions, financial aid, marketing, communications, and development at The Phelps School, a small boys boarding/day school, followed by five years in the development office at George School, a larger Quaker boarding/day school, and then following the birth of my daughter, moved to Kimberton Waldorf School. I have been the director of marketing and outreach for two years now, where I manage all communications, marketing strategy, and the admissions funnel. ------------------------------ Emily Shaker Marketing and Outreach Kimberton Waldorf School Phoenixville PA emilyshaker@mac.com ------------------------------

    Wow, Cindy,

You have quite an interesting re-introduction story. Great to hear it.

My name is Portia. I have been working at Dore Academy/The John Crosland School for eight years. My role as Director of Admissions has expanded greatly over those years to encompass management of several departments/areas (i.e. financial aid, extended day program, registration). Since I have been here, I have had the authority to create many new programs that have actually stuck and flourished. There are some advantages to being at small independent schools.

My son has had the experience of both private and public school settings. Both were beneficial for him in different ways.

Personally, my passions lie in being a fiber artist, reading lots, and running (preferably outside). So I spend many hours of my time crocheting and painting, reading the next interesting thing and running.

Thanks for the opportunity to introduce myself!  I'm new as the Director of Admission at Carolina Day School, but the school I used to work at in New York City was one of the founding members of AISAP.  I remember and miss Natasha Sahadi.

Before coming here, I worked at Columbia University as Director of the School and Child Care Search Service.  I was privileged to work with families who studied and worked at Columbia -- or were being recruited to Columbia -- and who needed help navigating the educational landscape of school options in the New York metropolitan area.

Helping these families motivated me to work again in an independent school.  I'm loving being in Asheville, North Carolina and am so happy to be at this wonderful institution.

I look forward to sharing experiences with my colleagues across the country.

Hi Everyone! So great to meet you all. I am currently the Assistant Director of Admission at Browne Academy in Alexandria, VA. I received a Bachelor of Music degree with a focus in musical theatre from the Catholic University of America (CUA) and am finishing up my Master of Arts degree in Early Childhood Special Education, also at CUA. Prior to Browne Academy, I served as the Enrollment Coordinator at CUA’s School of Music for three years, recruiting high school students for the university’s prestigious music program. I grew up in the world of the performing arts and continue to immerse myself in that world today through occasional film and television appearances, as well as through my work with Only Make Believe, a non-profit organization that brings interactive theatre to children in hospitals and other care facilities. Looking forward to growing in this community!

HI. My name is Andy Ferrara, and I have just started my tenure as Assistant Director of Admission at Fay School, in Southborough, MA. Primarily, my job at Fay School is to help oversee day school admission, with a specific focus on our Primary and Lower School enrollment.

I have worked in independent schools in and around the Boston area for the past 20 years, where I have held positions as Associate Director of Middle and Upper School Admissions, history teacher, advisor, coach and Middle School Dean. Although I have worked in the field of admissions for three years,  I have only recently discovered a way to become more fully invested in the industry. Thus, I am excited to join AISAP and begin the certification process. My first exposure to AISAP was through attending a conference in Fort Worth, TX this past July. There, I found like-minded professionals, who cared deeply about the role that an office of admission plays in the overall life of a school. Certification seemed like the next logical step in my professional development.

I look forward to learning so much more about the field of admissions from the collective minds of AISAP members.

Howdy!  I am excited to be a part of this amazing organization.

    Professionally:

I have worked in Enrollment Services, Higher Education Consulting, and Paying for College organizations for two decades. In 2014 I joined Hockaday as an Associate Director of College Counseling, after serving as Director of Texas Regional Recruitment at The University of Georgia.  After two years in College Counseling, I  transitioned to Admission, as Assistant Director of Middle School Admission at Hockaday.

I am a member for the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), The Texas Association for College Admission Counseling (TACAC), The College Board and the Association for College Counselors in Independent Schools (ACCIS). While at TACAC I served as Co-Chair of the Conference Planning Committee and served as Co-Chair of the Drive-In Workshops throughout Texas.  As a Regional Recruiter,  I served as Secretary of the Dallas Admission Regional Network for two years, and I am looking forward to becoming involved with the Association of Independent School Admission Professionals (AISAP).

    Personally:

I was born in Colombia, South America, consider Houston my hometown, and currently live in Richardson, Texas with my husband (Eric), son (Aiden, 9 year old), and our beloved Labradoodle puppy (Draco, 1 year old). We enjoy outdoor adventures, travel, and board games. I also consider myself an amateur photographer and I look for opportunities to document special moments.

I look forward to getting to know the organization and its members better in the years to come.

    Hi Friends!

Thank you for starting this thread, Cindy. My name is Susan and I just relocated from Los Angeles, CA to West Hartford, CT. My path to the admission office is rather unique, where I started as an IECA consultant, transitioned to help start a boarding school in Downtown Los Angeles, and recently (as of August 2017) landed in a traditional New England day school. I look forward to learning from you all and tapping into this "hive mind" as we adapt and change with the demands of the admission office!

    Hello Everyone!

I've recently started as an Admissions Associate at The Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Connecticut. My job is three-part: To increase awareness about our school and the programs we offer, to lead our Cicerone (student tour guide) program, and to act as the admissions liasion for our equestrian program.

After graduating from Walker's, I received my B.S.B.A. from Elon University with a concentration in Entrepreneurship and Marketing/Sales. Prior to Walker's, I worked in digital content marketing and advised startups on business planning, development, and marketing strategies.

I'm hoping to learn as much as I can and I look forward to getting to know everyone.

    Dear All
I'm so happy to be a part of this community. My name is Naia Helweg and I'm the Admission Officer at Rygaards International School in Denmark. We don't have that many international schools in Denmark which means that we are not that many Admissions offices in Denmark. So I dont have that many to bounce ideas of with and network with. So I look so much forward to use this forum and benefit from all you wonderful peoples experience.
    Have a wonderful day
    Kind regards
    Naia

    Hello AISAP Community!

I just joined Foxcroft School in Middleburg, VA as the Director of Admission, and wanted to follow-up to introduce myself to everybody. Although I am new to independent schools, I have worked in enrollment management for 15 years, serving various colleges and universities in Philadelphia and New England as an Admissions Director and VP along the way.

I sincerely believe in the transformative power of education and enjoy the opportunities this profession allows for helping students access the possibilities - socially, academically, professionally, and otherwise - inherent to the educational experiences that await them. I believe that education is like a key of sorts; one with the ability to open doors that reveal pathways of opportunity - to success, fulfillment, financial stability, etc. It's a powerful tool that can change one's life. Some doors cannot be opened without the right key, and as an enrollment professional, I am grateful for the chance this career has given me to make a significant impact in the lives of those whose paths cross with mine.

In this profession, we are all facilitators of opportunity.

I am very excited about this shift in my professional journey, and I look forward to connecting with you folks. In the meantime, feel free to hit me up with any sage advice, horror stories (!), or general wisdom you might feel I could benefit from. If your travels take you near Middleburg, VA, get a hold of me and I'll treat you to lunch. I look forward to meeting you!

    Best,
    Ken
