We are looking for a new format for our school wide Open House. For the last few years, we have held this on a weekend afternoon in mid-February, but have not had a good turn out. I was thinking about hosting an evening event for parents and offer childcare. One of our faculty suggested making it a happy hour type event. Have others used this type of format, and if so, was it successful?

Yes. Do something outside of working hours and invite the children Rather than childcare have teachers there to do a signature event with the kids like a science steam or math challenge. Alcohol isn’t as important as value added activities.

I have done them in the past and they have turned into mini-open houses which while well attended were not terrific in terms of yield.

This year I am going to use a simplified format.  Start with a welcome and a 30,000 foot view about who we are, followed by an in the classroom experience with the parents and whatever children may be there and then end with a quick admission/financial aid overview.  No tours since the campus will be dark.
