From the trenches: AP Classes and Enrollment Impact

I have been asked by a member of AISAP to pose this question -

    The question:

My school is considering moving beyond the APs so that we can provide a more robust and rigorous curriculum.  If your school has made this move, would you be willing to share the impact that decision had on your enrollment numbers?

Thanks all - looking forward to hearing from you all -

My school is also considering a move away from AP; I would be equally interested in learning if this has affected enrollment in other schools.

Welcome aboard! We have never taught Advanced Placement and, yes, it has sometimes hurt us in applications. We offer students the opportunity to take classes at no charge and for credit at our neighboring institution, The University of the South, which is a far better opportunity, BUT on many of the search engines for private schools and boarding schools, AP is a search criteria but the opportunity to take actual college courses is not. I am certain that we sometimes didn’t make the cut when a family was doing an initial search - the pain of being on the bleeding edge of innovation. That said, as more schools jettison the AP curriculum, more families will understand the decision and, perhaps more of the aggregating sites will come up with better search criteria.

We just jettisoned the AP curriculum and so this will be the first admission cycle that we "live it." We did convey the change in last year's cycle and did not see a definable impact.

It helps that our current parent population was enthusiastically on board for this change. Since they are our #1 word-of-mouth marketers, this support was critical!
