    Hi Everyone,

    We have been using the AABL (Admission Assessment for Beginning Learners) in our Fort Worth Consortium for K testing for the past few years. We learned yesterday that ERB will be ending the AABL program after the 19-20 school year. We will need to spend the next school year deciding on a new assessment. This topic was posted about a month ago, but received limited replies. If you would, please quickly reply with your K assessment method and any feedback. I would like to compile a list of options to research in the coming months.

    Hi Everyone,

      At Cranbrook we use a mix of a few different assessment tools.  We use the Beery VMI, the BOEHM and a few informal assessments that our teachers administer.  I am happy to talk more with anyone who has questions about how we assess kindergarteners.

    We were disappointed to learn the news about the AABL as well. This has been a wonderful tool for us for first grade assessments over the past several years. Hoping this closed door leads to an open window as we all share our discovery for a new assessment. We are fortunate to have a wonderful educational psychologist on staff who has volunteered to help in this search, and I am grateful for the expertise she brings on issues like this one. I will look forward to continuing this discussion with everyone over the next several months.

    For rising 1st through 8th grade students we have been using the KBIT & the KTEA Brief as our admission assessment for the past 3 years. We administer on campus through our school counselor.

    It has been an effective tool for admission and for on-boarding students. Plus, it is a great way to get to know students, their personalities, how they problem-solve, etc.

    These are one-on-one assessments that generally takes 1hour 15 to 1hour 30 minutes. It has taken as little as an hour or as long as 2 hours.

    We have been extremely pleased with this battery of assessments and its effectiveness in getting to truly know applicants - academically and personally.

    We too had a consortium meeting in Dallas yesterday and discussed the demise of the AABL. We use it for 1st grade applicants. We are hoping that we can find an alternative that we could all agree on thus allowing our families to only test once, but we fear that will be quite difficult. If anyone can share how they are assessing students applying to 1st grade, we would appreciate that as well.

    At Foote School, we use the YCAT for Kindergarten and Grade 1 admissions. 

    We use the full assessment for Gr 1 applicants but leave out the writing section for K applicants (and just have them write their name on a letter strip instead).
    The rest of the assessment includes General Information, Reading, Mathematics and Spoken Language and allows us to have raw scores, age equivalents/developmental age, percentiles and quotients (based on chronological age). 
    This is administered 1:1 for both grades. For Kindergarten, it takes roughly 10-15 min to administer and for Grade 1, we allow 25-30 min. 

    Our assessments take place as part of a Saturday morning play visit for Kindergarten applicants. They have 1 hr 15 min for morning meeting, free play and this short assessment. We usually have 3 adults in the room with 6 children so we can have 2 testers and 1 teacher observing and engaging in play with the kids as they rotate through the 1:1 time. The group of teachers fill in an observation form for each child immediately after the visit to round out our understanding of applicants. We note transitions, following directions, interactions with peers and adults, speech, fine and gross motor. We run two classrooms at once and have two sessions per Saturday followed by a lunch meeting to discuss the visits while it is all fresh. We've found this to be an important part of the process because it allows for all teachers involved (K teachers, learning support teachers and school counselor) to share back with the group and identify areas to follow up or learn more by visiting children in their preschool setting or through a phone call with the teacher.

    While Kindergarten applicants visit in the classrooms, prospective parents meet with a member of the Foote Admissions office, Foote parents and Middle School students so they have an opportunity to hear different perspectives and ask questions about our program and community.
