Webinar | Standards of Good Practice for Including Character Criteria in Admissions

When:  Feb 5, 2020 from 03:00 PM to 04:00 PM (ET)
Explicit and systematic use of character criteria in admission has grown rapidly over the last 3-4 years. Independent schools are at the forefront of asserting the importance of character and developing new admission approaches and practices. With the growth of a “character revolution” in admission, however, various constituencies have raised questions about how best to bring fairness, consistency and ethics to the admission process. In response, the Character Collaborative, a national organization of 75 institutions (including 27 independent schools, AISAP and EMA), has articulated standards of good practice to address these concerns and guide future development. The webinar will address the emergence of the standards and practical ways to ensure their implementation.

Presenter: David Holmes, Executive Director, Character Collaborative

David Holmes co-founded the Character Collaborative in 2016 and serves as Executive Director. He was a tenured professor and academic administrator at the University of Vermont, has led two independent schools (Suffield Academy and Sun Valley Community School), and helped found a national organization to support disadvantaged youth on the path to higher education. He also designed and co-founded Escola SESC, a boarding school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that draws disadvantaged students from all 27 states. He has a BA from Middlebury College, an MA from Columbia University, and a PHD from the University of Denver.
