7 Parent Interview Tips for Independent School Admissions

For over 25 years, I’ve had the privilege of meeting thousands of families as an admission professional at independent schools. One of the most important parts of the application process is the parent interview. It’s often the first chance for families to share their story, their hopes for their child, and why a particular school feels like the right fit.

While every school has its own culture, there are some universal truths when it comes to a successful parent interview. Here are my top tips to help parents prepare thoughtfully and authentically.

1. Be Yourself—Warm, Honest, and Real
Admissions professionals are not looking for rehearsed speeches or perfect answers. We’re looking to get to know you, your child’s story, your parenting values, and your hopes for their future. Speak from the heart, and trust that genuine conversation makes a lasting impression.

2. Focus on Your Child’s Strengths, and Their Growth Areas Too
It’s natural to want to present your child in the best light, but don’t shy away from sharing how they’re still growing. Admissions teams value self-awareness and authenticity. If your child struggles with transitions or needs extra time with writing, for example, mention it, but also share how you’ve supported them.

3. Do Your Homework
Take time to explore the school’s mission, programs, and philosophy. Ask questions that show curiosity and care, and not just “what’s your average class size?” but also, “How does your community support new students socially and emotionally?” or “Can you share how the school partners with families?”

4. Avoid Over-Scripting Your Child’s Role
Some parents unintentionally pressure their child to “perform” during interviews or visits. Trust that the admissions staff are skilled at working with children, and they can tell when a child is speaking freely. Let your child be a child, and don’t stress if they’re shy, quiet, or have a silly moment.

5. Keep the Conversation Child-Centered
It can be tempting to focus on your own background or preferences, especially if you’re an alum or a seasoned independent school parent. The school is trying to understand what your child needs and how they will grow in the community. Keep circling back to your child’s personality, passions, and needs.

6. Don’t Try to “Sell” the School on Your Family
The interview is not about convincing the school you’re a perfect family. It’s about discovering mutual fit. Be open about your hopes, but also be ready to listen. Often, it’s in the conversation exchange that the best insights emerge for both sides.

7. Express Interest, But Avoid Comparisons
If you love a school, say so! But try not to compare schools against each other during the interview. Each school deserves to feel like your top choice during the conversation.

Final Thought: It’s a Two-Way Conversation

The best parent interviews are, in fact, conversations and connecting with your family. Admissions teams care deeply about finding the right match for each child, and that includes families who will contribute positively to the school community.

So take a deep breath, show up as yourself, and trust the process.
