Using DASL and Data to Guide Your Enrollment Strategy

Admission and Enrollment leaders need to know how to benchmark data, identify trends, and understand market demographics. Join us for this three-part online class that will demonstrate the critical importance of data and how you can utilize it to drive strategy and exhibit leadership to your school and board.

This course will be a hands-on, “real time” learning experience. You will learn how to access and use NAIS national and regional data to help identify questions and guide future enrollment planning at your school. You’ll be given homework assignments to complete using your school’s data in between sessions. We strongly suggest attending the sessions live in order to make the most of each lesson using your own data. However, recordings of the sessions will be distributed after each class for those who signed up in advance.

During this three-part class, as admission and enrollment professionals, you will:
  1. Get past the fear of manipulating data to create charts and custom reports
  2. Learn which data you should track and why it is important
  3. Identify which area schools should serve as your benchmarking/comparative group
  4. Learn how to use Excel and pivot tables to interpret data and tell your story
  5. Learn how to access DASL and Market View to create customized reports
  6. Gain a clearer understanding of the importance of demographic data for enrollment planning

Participants will have access to the  DASL data tools if they are NAIS members or AISAP members. Advance sign up for this course is required so that participants can login into the DASL portal in advance of the course.

Session I - Monday, May 16  2-3:15pm ET
The 30,000 foot view: An Overview of Data for School Leaders (DASL) and Introduction to Quick Reports
The session will include a step-by-step guide on how to access and use the DASL Databook and benchmarking tools to make comparisons, answer questions, and use data to guide strategy. Working alongside the presenters, you will create customized benchmarking reports for your school. With just a few clicks, you can populate 12 critical reports, including enrollment, financial operations, diversity, and advancement to show how your school stacks up against others in your area and across the country.

Session II  -  Wednesday, May 18 2-3:15pm ET 
Using Excel and Pivot Tables with DASL Reports
Using real time data from DASL, you will learn how to download your data into Excel in order to create reports and charts, answer key questions, and tell your data story.

Session III  -  Friday, May 20 2-3:15pm ET 
Gain Insight into Your Market to Guide Future Enrollment Strategy
We will build upon our work with DASL reports and introduce Market View, NAIS’s data-visualization tool. We will teach you how to upload your own data to see trends in your area. You’ll learn how Market View's easy-to-use mapping technology and affordability algorithm overlay local demographic and traffic info, along with economic data.


Hilary LaMonte, Sr. VP Data and Analysis for School Leadership (DASL), NAIS

For the past twenty years, Hilary has built online environments and tools designed to network successful practice and build professional effectiveness across the K12 education sector. Most of this work has found its home in national-level associations serving teachers, administrators, and school boards. Currently, she leads the team at NAIS building online data repositories and tools to assist independent school leaders in making effective decisions with meaningful information. Hilary holds a B.A. in Slavic Languages and Literature from Stanford University, an M.Ed. from the University of Virginia (UVA) in Social Foundations of Education, and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Research, Statistics and Evaluation at UVA.

Orna Siegel, Director of Enrollment and Tuition Assistance, Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School

Orna has worked in the field of Jewish education for 21 years, and received Hebrew College’s prize for Outstanding Achievement in Jewish Education. Before joining Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, she was the Director of Admission at JCDS, Boston’s Jewish Community Day School, where she worked to connect prospective families to the vision of the school. Orna has extensive teaching experience, including everything from middle school humanities and Mishnah to high school courses on the History of Israel and hip-hop dancing.

Orna earned a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Wesleyan University, studied at Nishmat in Israel, and is currently pursuing a Master degree in Jewish Education as a Legacy Heritage Fellow at Hebrew College. She lives in Potomac, Maryland, with her husband and four children.

Stephanie Wilkinson, Senior Director of Engineering, NAIS

Stephanie has worked in education since 2006. She began in higher ed, served in charter schools, and now works with independent schools. Stephanie has been building software for independent schools for nine years, and leads engineering at the National Association of Independent Schools.

Stephanie is a self-taught engineer with a BA from the University of California. She lives in Los Angeles with her partner and daughter Andromeda.
